Being human seems so ordinary as a mass of oxygen and carbon. The creation story serves to only highlight the dustiness of our being. So, artists dream of superpowered, and Marvel-lous versions of humanity to carry us to dizzying heights of what we could be. However, we settle for having a ‘faith in humanity’ because we see great feats of kindness and mercy.
Yet God’s plans for humanity make our dreams look rather small. We will not be mere superheroes, but glorious image-of-God-bearers. We receive this status not from our value or impressiveness, but rather out of God’s great kindness to us through the God-man Jesus Christ. So, when Jesus returns, justice and mercy will be default behaviours. Even now as we put on humility and forgiveness, we experience better-than-dust moments of repaired friendships.
